The spider cracks are now being filled with Duramix 4055 Polyester Putty. It's a two-part putty, and is quite easy to use. The application is very smooth, and it cures to a sandable state in about 20 minutes.
The sandpaper that I'm using is quite coarse (80 grit), but is working well.
